Obsidian has their own Onyx engine but as far as I know they haven't developed a game on it since Dungeon Siege III, so it might be discontinued. They have been using other game engines like Unity and Unreal Engine for games since then. If Obsidian were to develop another Fallout game, I think it would likely be on Bethesda's Creation Engine. However, since the original creator of Fallout, Tim Cain, works at Obsidian, they may instead produce a spinoff Fallout series that are more similar to the original games and choose to use a different engine. His last game was "The Outer Worlds", which plays similar to the Bethesda Fallout games. The game was highly praised for its writing, but had many critics lambasting other aspects of it. Josh Sawyer, the creative director and lead designer on Fallout: New Vegas is still working at Obsidian and has gone on to create the very well received RPGs "Pillars of Eternity" and "Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire" which will lend its setting to the Elder Scrolls-looking "Avowed", which is currently in development at Bethesda - though Josh Sawyer is not involved with its development and is instead himself working on a different project. Chris Avellone, creative designer for Fallout 2 and writer and project lead on Fallout New Vegas's DLC content, left the company in 2015 to work as a freelancer. ![]() It would be awesome to get another Fallout game under Obsidian's belt but - due mainly to the awesome modding community, I personally believe it is best that future products remain within the Creation Engine. Adding a multiplayer element adds an order of complexity to the project, as the studio takes on the hosting and matchmaking of gamers worldwide and tries to maintain the highest standards across multiple regions.īut, Embark Studios couldn’t afford to throw money or manpower at this project for years at a time, so to make ARC Raiders a reality with the resources it had, it needed to rethink the way games were developed. To get to where it needed to be, it required a powerful backend that could give developers the freedom to innovate and deliver a rock-solid, high-quality, high-performance experience for gamers.
